Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she entered Temple University. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become a teacher of English in a secondary school. After three years of being a teacher's aide and studying the possibility of becoming a high-school English teacher came to a halt. She began her career as a spoken-word performer, performing her pieces during poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by them. The singer performed at an Roots performance. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience as an actor in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first signed artist for Hidden Beach Recordings. Hidden Beach Recordings label.
